The Greatest Guitar Building Competition

In the troublesome year of 2020, the idea was hatched to create a competition to see who could build the best guitar!

Going into the 2nd year of this fantastic competition we are again giving makers across the globe the opportunity to showcase their amazing talent. 

Another year on we believe that this competition is going to be bigger and better than ever!

What do you need to do to compete in the GGBO?



There will be 2 competitions, a Kit Build and a scratch build with a larger proportion of the prize pool going to the Scratch build. The prize is bigger but the risk is Higher!

Scratch Build: A scratch build guitar is completely from scratch, this means that the body and neck cannot be prefabricated.

Kit Build: If you are using a prefabricated body or neck, or one or the other then you must enter the kit build competition. 

When you have entered you will be sent an application form which is required to be filled out and sent back to: We require your YouTube channel and Instagram in this form. We also ask for a short biography to be shown on the 2021 participants page.


There will be a £25 entrance fee per competition which is for administration and to allow us to run the competition. The competition would not be made possible without this. You will also be sent a specialist code to get a 15% discount code for use on the where you can purchase a kit guitar for the 'Kit Build' challenge to help them towards the build.


We require you to produce YouTube videos for your builds with a minimum of 1 and recommended maximum of 6. Your build will be judged on your FINAL video that should briefly show progress of your whole build as well as the finished product. This video must be a maximum of 15 minutes long. You will also need to submit 5 Photos showcasing your build. These photos must be sent to with the subject/name '5 Final Phots'


If it is your first experience with YouTube do not worry! Ben will has released a tutorial on how to create a good YouTube video and take perfect photos of your guitar. 







There will be two rounds of judging. One will be public through the 2021 participants page (find on the site menu bar) and the other will be through our selected judging panel (find out more at the 'Judging Panel' menu tab). 


You will be able to vote for your favourite guitar via the 2021 participants page by clicking on participants profile and selecting 'vote'. Voting will take place from the 1st to the 5th of July. A day later on the 6th of July the top 10 voted participants will be released via the website. These 



The top 10 voted participants from both competitions will then go through to the final round. The 10 official and un-official finalists will be rigorously judged by the selected  judges to establish a winner as well as positions for the other finalists. The top 5 will receive prizes based on their position. Finalists will be presented on a dedicated finalists page where the builds will be showcased.

A finalists video will be uploaded to our YouTube on Tuesday the 20th of July 2021 presenting the winner for both competitions as well as finalists positions.

The winner of this years competition will be allowed to enter next years Official Competition.

Our Pledge: Everyone should be allowed to build!

The Great Guitar Build Off will be starting its journey to help disadvantaged Luthiers to realise their goals of building stunning instruments. Thats why we need your help. We will be taking donations throughout the competition on the Great Guitar Build Off website where 100% of profits will go to providing materials and courses for successful applicants to our fund.

Once the Guitars from the invitational Guitar Build off competition are auctioned, 50% off each sale after fees will go to the builder’s charity of choice and the other 50% will go to helping the Great guitar build off realise its goals and allow disadvantaged budding Luthiers to access Guitar building training.
